Safeguarding

Elliott Shaw from Morgan Sindall is working in partnership with the South Thames College Employability Team to deliver an engaging, industry-focused live brief titled "Winning Work in Construction." This initiative is being delivered to Level 2 Plumbing and Level 2 Electrical Installation learners, providing them with invaluable experience in tendering for real-world construction projects.

Launched on 14th May, the project involves learners working in teams to theoretically bid for construction packages linked to an actual primary school project currently underway in Nine Elms. Plumbing students are focusing on bids for WC installations, while Electrical Installation learners are concentrating on classroom electrical works.

The initiative replicates a real-life tendering process and gives learners a practical understanding of what it takes to win work in the construction industry. It also develops a wide range of transferable employability skills, including:

  • Creating cost plans

  • Demonstrating social value

  • Producing Gantt charts

  • Considering sustainability

  • Collaborating effectively as a team

  • Presenting to an expert panel

Additionally, learners will take part in a CV workshop, and top-performing teams will be recognised at a special award ceremony and site visit to the live Nine Elms construction site in June. Winners will also be considered for work experience placements or apprenticeship opportunities with Morgan Sindall.

This collaborative project is a prime example of how South Thames College partners with leading industry professionals to deliver hands-on, career-focused learning experiences—equipping students with the skills and confidence to thrive in the world of work.
